R&B Peak Position: #60
"I send you my love/ With a dozen roses/ Make sure that you knows it's/ From the bottom of my heart..."
Seamlessly fusing hip hop, reggae, dancehall and R&B, Born Jamericans (smooth crooner Notch and rugged voiced ragga MC Edley Shine) achieved international cult fandom over the course of two mid-90's albums with 'head-appreciated tracks like "Boom Shak-A-Tack" and "Yardcore"). However, there would be less of a street-centric emphasis on their final charting single, '97's "Send My Love/ Send One Your Love" which saw them twisting an old Stevie Wonder love ballad into a modern day, island-scented Valentine.
Based on Wonder's 1979 "Send One Your Love", the lone hit to emerge from the legend's poorly-received, mostly-instrumental soundtrack album Journey Through The Secret Life of Plants, "Send My Love" fixed it's cheesy, romance advice script to a tender hip-pop beat that brought any listener within a mile-wide radius into a sublime, amorous high.
Betwixt producer Salaam Remi's warm-and-fuzzy boom-bap orchestration and Notch's sweetened vocal sending "la-la"'s like air kisses across the skies, Shine's throaty chants encouraged the object of his affection to "break these shackles from off my feet", pining for her to declare a reciprocation of the same aching feelings he held for her. It was an obvious crossover move, but it worked, to this day continuing to warm hearts the world over with it's every occasional radio spin.
Best Moment: Notch's floaty ad-libs.
DL: "Send My Love/ Send One Your Love" (YFH)
