"You may have had him once but I got him all the time"
Los Angeles trio MoKenStef may have had one of the most unusual monikers in girl group history (it smashed together the first syllables in the names of members Monifa Bethune, Kenya Hadley and Stephanie Sinclair), but that didn't stop them from gaining some serious ground in the summer of 1995 with the memorable man-claimer "He's Mine".
With it's humorous nanny-nanny hook and a silky R&B beat that melded together grade-A samples from Prince's falsetto classic "Do Me Baby" and Zapp's oft-sampled "Be Alright", "He's Mine" gave a typical daytime TV scenario some soulful bite as one woman broke the sad truth down to her man's one-time "side piece". "He might be doing you/ But he's thinkin' about me/ So lay that finger on another lover/ And go find another brother," the opening lines warned. But this wasn't just another angry rant. Naw, through jazzy-inflected vocals that conveyed a confident air, MoKenStef confronted the temporary mistress with pity rather than the typical slap across the face these situations usually resulted in.
She "gave it up too soon" and ended up being played like a trick, they smirk with pride, alerting the girl that he's back at home where he should be with a "lover that is strong" before ending the conversation with some wise advice: "Never fall in love with a man who don't love you".
Too bad MoKenStef couldn't have followed some advice themselves and ended up with a longer career. After "He's Mine" hit the R&B and Pop Top Ten and went Gold (becoming a anthem for foolish, boyfriend-clinging females everywhere in the process), the group saw their next single, the equally strong "Sex In The Rain", fizzle out at a disappointing #63 and never released another album or single again.

i've always loved yet hated this song for the fact that the main chick is no better off than the outside chick she's dissing. still a classic for me tho and the grand puba remix is the shit.
